Is this just distracting me??

We have been off the air for a few days. We apologise for any withdrawal symptoms, that you may have??

Found this entry in the Smartmobs blog this week. Smartmobs had pointed to the rrove blog. When does this hyperlinking become recursive?? Or do they call this viral marketing??

The blog entry is about community mapping software, such as Wikimapia, Wayfaring, Platial, Frappr, Placeopedia, Tagzania, Plazes, Yelp, Dodgeball.

What got me excited about this software, putting my teacher hat on, was the plethora of potential ways in which this software could be used in education.

Being a cyclist (well, a baby boomer in crisis) I used Wayfaring to create my own cycling routes I have done in Adelaide (Australia - great spot) and hope to share with others who try different routes. What a fantastic way to share our cycling experiences and try new ones!! Could this be used in orienteering for example?

Some other community software called ‘Drawball’, which is similar to Swarmsketch, is a large canvas on which community members can draw. Have a look at the wikipedia entry which explains Drawball better than I can.

And then Allan Levine shows how powerpoint has been ‘web2.0ified’ in a product called Slideshare. Allan makes some interesting observations about Slideshare in his blog. Allan refers to Drawball….showing his artistic bent!!

So is this really useful software or not? I think it has great potential, so all we need is a community to explore and experiement. Any takers??

I was introduced to www.bikely.com today, another cycling route application. Another one to add to the list.
