read-write web

One of the terms that seems to be used quite a lot lately is the read-write web. While I understand the intention of the term I believe it still embeds us in the world of text and in my view, we have really moved on from that. I read and write text, I talk and listen to audio, record and play video etc so read/write lacks a number of dimensions. In a technical sense, I suppose I may be reading from or writing to a disk drive somewhere no matter whether I am using text, video, audio etc. In realtime video/audio conferencing, I may not even be doing that (forget for a minute caching, logging etc). Still, I haven’t found a better term that can convey the idea of contribution and consumption of content/services that is easily understood and remembered.

    Hi Jer,

I enjoyed reading your posts, and wanted to introduce to you a cool site.

It’s called Sutree (http://www.sutree.com), and it’s a social bookmarking site for free video lessons & tutorials.

    Worth checking out!

    Sincerely,
    David A.

Funny, I never thought of read/write in text terms.
For me it’s like graffiti (but with video!) - instead of just reading stuff from the web, I find myself decorating the web with video, audio, piccies and text.

In fact, yesterday I had a very read/write moment on the bit torrents - I ‘wrote’ my first video using the new azureus client.

Consumption and Contribution conjur up horrible images for me ;-)

    Hey Mike,
good to hear from you. The idea’s been floating around in my mind for a while after listening to a presentation by Lawrence Lessig (http://www.lessig.org/blog/) where he talked about generations of us being stuck in the world of text and how that is reflected in our language. In an effort to rid myself of being stuck in the world of text I just struggle a bit with the term read/write.

    Cheers,
    Jerry

Hi Jerry - I’ve often thought that myself. I love the image Mike conjurs up with graffiti - but different terms like providing and consuming or creating and using would be great in taking us to another level. What I do with content isn’t just reading anymore and what I contribute isn’t always written.
