Catchment Detox

Over the last few months I have been spending a bit of time looking at various games platforms, particularly web-based games. Here’s a new initiative from the ABC called Catchment Detox supporting learning about environmental issues and management of catchments. From the website:

It’s an online game where you’re in charge of the whole catchment. You get to decide what activities you undertake - whether to plant crops, log forests, build factories or set up national parks. The aim is to fix environmental problems and provide food and wealth for the population.

It’s an interesting looking game which looks like it was developed in Flash. I would like to find out more about it.

    This is a really engaging game - at least the first time. I was proud that I’d managed to create a sustainable community with mixed land use and protection of water and biodiversity. The game needs a bit more feedback so that it’s clear how the decisions made impact on the final outcome. But a good resource for teachers to get students to think about environmental issues.

    In response to Jerry Leeson’s request for more information about Catchment Detox.

    The model behind the Catchment Detox game was developed by Nick Marsh, Sylvain Arene and Stuart Minchin in a collaboration between the CSIRO Division of Land and Water and the eWater Cooperative Research Centre.

    Concept is a tool for creating dynamic conceptual diagrams. Concept was originally designed for a natural resource management audience, but it could be used by anyone who needs to visualise a process.
