Can Moodle change a school? Case study from Belmont City College

Whenever the discussion of ICT in education becomes academic and theoretical it is heartening and inspiring to see the real difference it can make on the ground - to teachers, to students, to parents, and the broader school community.

This vid from Tomaz Lasic at Belmont City College in Perth demonstrates how the school has implemented and used Moodle - a free open source course management and community building software application.

One of the most interesting elements is the approach the school has taken to professional development (PD) for their teachers: rather than focusing on providing formal PD, the school provides a ‘click and swear’ model - with ICT support from Tomaz delivered as needed.

As a long-time ‘click and swear’ learner of ICT who learns what is needed to be learned for the task at hand (and not much more) this approach, rather than a half day isolated from the real activity of the school, makes good sense - and the following vid demonstrates the way that Moodle has been implemented is having a positive impact - not just on teaching and learning but also in community building within the school, between staff, and between staff and students. All power to them.

Yes, it can change a school…it only takes one lawsuit. If you are concerned about security, FERPA, SPAM, etc. see the Moodle Security tag (and other tags) at www.moodleus.org
