Picnik in Flickr has a basket load of goodies

As a Flickr addict who uses her mobile phone camera and mobile net connection to Flickr, I was thrilled to see that Flickr has partnered with online photo editor Picnik.

Anyone with a free or pro account in Flickr can take advantage of Picnik’s basic photo editing functionality. And its basic functions are all that most will need.

Flickr users will find the link to the Picnik tool in their Flickr photo bar:

The options it provides include Cropping, Rotating, Re-sizing, Exposure, Colours, Sharpening and fixing the dreaded Red Eye.

The Crop was quite sophisticated and allows for free-style proportions or pre-sets for avatars for popular social networking sites.

It also offers scaling options in percentages or pixels which is very handy for web work and the Exposure options suprised me by including a sliding levels adjustment tool which I’d thought Picnik would have reserved for its premium service.

The wow factor for me comes at the end of the editing process in Picnik. When you click on Save, you can review your Flickr information such as title, description and tags, privacy settings and sets. You can also choose to replace the photo you’ve just edited or to save the newly edited version as a new photo.

This outstanding feature allows a user to create multiple avatars from one photo without having to install image editing software. It also allows users to create multiple images from one shot.

Mobile web publishers and users who don’t have the luxury of freely installing software on their systems will surely flock to Picnik. The user-friendly interface will serve novice users well and the range of tools will please more advanced users who want to clean up happy snaps. Enjoy the Picnik and let me know if you encounter any bugs.
