In January I blogged about Flickr Commons — a program whereby Flickr invites cultural institutions to share their library of photos and invite the public to tag them.
Now, the State Library of NSW is the first Australian library to join in.
The curators have selected one hundred photos that they feel capture “quirky and momentous historical ‘firsts’ ” from Australia’s past for their initial launch on Flickr.
NSW State Librarian, Regina Sutton says she hopes “the partnership with Flickr will potentially see new information and knowledge added to the images through tagging and user comments, making the collection even richer in content for the community and more accessible than ever before.”
The copyright on the photos are all “no known copyright restrictions”.
The library plans to add to the online collection on a regular basis - if Flickr is accessible in your institution, you can visit the NSW State Library’s Flickr collection at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/statelibraryofnsw/
If Flickr is not accessible from your institution, perhaps this move by the State Library of NSW is a good reason that Flickr should be accessible…
