Wikis in education (3)

I will try to make my blog today focus on more practical examples of wikis being used, and also perhaps some links to tools you might use.

A while back Graham Taylor pointed me to an example where he set up a “choose your own adventure” scenario: It was a dark and stormy night
Many of us have tried this with computing students, with programming languages, hyperlinked web pages, and even with Power point, but this does point out the true collaboration possible with a wiki as you imagine each member of the class beavering away simultaneously on their particular strand of the story.

Graham’s other creation of the Theballen wiki gives some great pointers and handy links to research etc.

And then there is Wiki News, where you and I can contribute to the collection of world news. You can even get it by RSS You need to create an account to become a contributor.

And then of course, my hobby, crime fiction. I am a contributor to the Australasian Crime Fiction site, where a group of us have put together reviews and information about books and authors. Here’s me here and here

Finally - want a wiki of your own?
Wikispaces is giving away 100,000 free wikis to R~12 educators. This is a great service as it enables you to set up open, protected or private wikis for education activities. Their usual price for ability to go private, and more importantly ad free, is USD $5 per month. Note: will need to get wikispaces unblocked at most school sites. Wiki Spaces is at http://www.wikispaces.com/site/for/teachers100K
