One of my workshop “battles” is getting people to understand RSS and today I came across one of the most attractive explanations I have seen so far. My journey took me from Lisa Lane’s Teaching Blog to How to Explain RSS the Oprah Way by Stephanie Qilao. I really like the concept that RSS feeds provide us with current stories.
Some of the materials that I use in my presentations are available in our edna Group Owners Training Space (GOTS) The large powerpoint there Tapping into edna content is the one that I recently created for the CEDIR/RILE University of Wollongong mini-conference. It’s main point is that once you know what you are looking for, and how to make use of it in keeping up with the news, then you begin to notice RSS feeds everywhere. In fact, now when I find something on a website I tend to look for whether it is delivered in an RSS feed.
On the edna website for example just about everything is available as RSS. There is extensive help available. You can get headlines, newsletters, search results, recently added resources, and more through RSS feeds. And if you want to display an RSS feed on your website, then you can use edna’s Feed2JS tool to create some code to put into your HTML page. edna’s Generators also provide code for edna’s Shared Information Services.

Interesting what you were saying about always looking for the RSS feed. I’ve found myself doing the same but expecting to be able to write a blog comment. Most websites aren’t blogs yet and don’t enable you post comments, but my expectation is there, already!
