We’ve had our final logistics run-through, and tried to work out what we’ve missed! Kerry Johnson (aka Pandora Kurrajong) will be on the island of Terra Incognita in Second Life, Gemma Mayfield and I will be in Live Classroom in various guises, the draft programme for the event here in Adelaide has been honed, the singers tuned, and the participants groomed. We think we are ready to go…
INFORMATION SOURCES
We’ve tried to make information available in as many places as possible including company blogs, personal blogs, Facebook, Twitter and the edna website.
The event page is http://www.edna.edu.au/edna/go/about/pid/2040
It includes a full schedule for both the Second Life and Live Classroom events.
PODCAST
If you can’t make it on the day, we hope to record the presentations made in the education.au offices and make them available as one half-hour episode of E-learning Insights.
If you haven’t already, make sure to subscribe to E-learning Insights via RSS, podcast or by email - http://www.edna.edu.au/edna/go/news/podcast/eli
CASE STUDY
Making audio from a live event available in two different online environments has been an exciting challenge and we’ve documented as much as we can about what we’ve done to set it up and promote it. We’ll write up an official case study/lessons learned as soon as possible after the event so that we can share our experiences.
TEST RUN - BOTH EVENTS
If you plan to attend one of the online events, make sure to test your headset headphones and mics before logging on.
The easiest way to do this for Windows users is to go to the Sound Recorder under Start - All Programs - Accessories - Entertainment and attempt to record sound. If you can record and hear it playing back, your headset should be good to go.
LIVE CLASSROOM EVENT
Live Classroom requires a minimal download and you’ll need to ensure that popups are allowed. Pop up blockers can be activated by anti-virus software, ad blocker software, Google toolbar and your browser so take some time to ensure these are all shut off.
Live Classroom runs a wizard that will test that your version of Java is up to date(Java is a behind the scenes software program used by many web applications), that your mic and headphones are working and that you have allowed pop-ups. This wizard takes about 5 minutes to go through if there are no problems, and longer if there are, so allow extra time.
SECOND LIFE EVENT
If you plan to attend the Second Life event, you must have a Second Life account set up and have the software downloaded and installed on the machine you plan to use. If you alreayd have a Second Life account it’s a good idea to log on early just to check there hasn’t been another required update. You can then log out and come back in when you wish to do so.
Thank you for being a part of the edna 10th birthday celebrations. If you can’t attend the events, make sure you check out the option of creating a digital story by going to the edna 10th birthday page: http://www.edna.edu.au/10birthday
