International Women’s Day, March 8

Celebrated on 8 March, International Women’s Day (IWD) is the global day connecting all women around the world and inspiring them to achieve their full potential. IWD celebrates the collective power of women past, present and future.

Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. While there are many large-scale initiatives, a rich and diverse fabric of local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women’s craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more. All celebrate women’s advancement and highlight the need for continued vigilance and action. In 1975, during International Women’s Year, the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March.

There are 83 registered events happening in Australia including breakfasts, brunches, morning teas, lunches, twilight drinks, dinners, walks, theatre performances, presentations, art exhibitions, and full day workshops. Search events for each country at http://www.internationalwomensday.com/events.asp If you are holding an event not already listed you are invited to add it to the growing list.
There is also a global picture gallery just waiting for you to submit yours.

Because March 8 is a Saturday, celebrations throughout Australia start from the beginning of March and a large number of events are not being held on “the day”.

In Adelaide you will find many of the education.au women at a UNIFEM breakfast at the Adelaide Convention Centre at 6.30 am on Wednesday 5 March being hosted by Senator Penny Wong. The guest speaker is Margaret Pomeranz, co-presenter of “the Movie Show/At The Movies”. More details at http://www.unifem.org.au/
There you can check the UNIFEM calendar of national events.
For the first time in 2008, UNIFEM Australia will be selling purple, International Women’s Day ribbons for $2 to signify the importance of celebrating IWD and empowering women throughout the world. All proceeds from ribbon sales will be directed to our chosen project. For more information about purchasing ribbons or selling ribbons in your school or workplace, please contact iwd@unifem.org.au

This year, all funds raised from Australian UNIFEM events will be directed to a program to Enhancing Rural Women’s Leadership and Participation in Nation Building in Timor-Leste (PERWL).
