Anzac Day, 25 April

Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand is a national day of commemoration. A public holiday occurs on the day of the landing at Gallipoli in 1915, the day that some historians have called our “baptism by fire”.

The day begins with dawn services throughout the country, and continues throughout the day with marches through town and city streets by ex-soldiers, relatives, and those in the current armed services. At Gallipoli itself, at Lone Pine, Australians and New Zealanders gather to honour those who have died on behalf of their country in wars.

edna has an ANZACS and ANZAC DAY theme page which will direct you to teaching resources. Check in the right hand margin of that page for specialised links to sound files for the Last Post and Reveille, resources for use in commemorative ceremonies, and short films and study guides.
