Why Australian secondary teachers retire early

An interesting study has come to my notice today, into factors in the rising rate of early retirement by secondary school teachers. This appears to be happening even despite (or perhaps because of) the shortage of qualified, experienced teachers.

Mark Keogh, a researcher at Queensland University of Technology, is “inviting secondary teachers who have retired between 45 and 65 years of age in rural and metropolitan areas to take part in his study which aims to find out which factors influenced them to take early leave from teaching.”

Mark has so far listed factors such as managerialism, classroom discipline, workloads and work intensification. Part of the puzzle is that Mark believes that many of them do not have good superannuation and therefore no financial incentive to retire. If you know someone who fits the description, point them to this article.

It would be interesting to hear from you if you are an Australian secondary teacher in the age range 45-65 but NOT thinking of retiring yet. What keeps you going?
