Digital Britain

Late in January this year the British government published a plan called digital Britain- interim report to secure Britain’s place at the forefront of the global digital economy. The interim report contains more than 20 recommendations, including specific proposals on:

* next generation networks
* universal access to broadband
* the creation of a second public service provider of scale
* the modernisation of wireless radio spectrum holdings
* a digital future for radio
* a new deal for digital content rights
* enhancing the digital delivery of public services

The Digital Britain Report underlines the importance of the communications sector, its crucial contribution to the economy and its role in building Britain’s industrial future.

This will obviously have spin-offs in education, where secondary schools are already undergoing a comprehensive rebuilding programme, in Building Schools for the Future (BSF) that has been going on since 2004.

Section 5 of the digital Britain report is titled Equipping Everyone to Benefit from Digital Britain, and it begins

    We will only reap the benefits of becoming a digital nation if we ensure that everyone has access to the right education, skills and digital media literacy programmes to ensure that being digital is within the grasp of everyone.

In the light of Australia’s DER rollout this is an interesting statement in the document.

    One key initiative in this area was recently launched by the Prime Minister, who in the Home Access programme made clear that every child in England should have access to a computer to enable them to fully engage in their education and through this initiative also be equipped for the contemporary knowledge economy.
