Web Trends in 2010

My attention was caught by a blog post by Sandy Swanson that summarised the CNN list of top web trends for 2010.

The original CNN list composed by Mashable’s Pete Cashmore talks in terms of 10 themes that will define the Web in 2010.

Here are the headings from his article.

  • Real-time ramps up: particularly real-time collaboration.
Last week I got an invitation to Google Wave which I haven’t yet taken up. Cashmore says “A crossover between instant messaging, e-mail and a wiki, Wave is a platform for getting things done together. .. In 2010, Wave’s utility will become more apparent.”
  • Location, location, location. We are going to see more location-sharing services: “Fueled by the ubiquity of GPS in modern smartphones…. Soon, our whereabouts may optionally be appended to every Tweet, blog comment, photo or video we post. “
  • Augmented reality
  • Content ‘curation’:
a perennial complaint:”content creation is outpacing our ability to consume it”: how do we make sure we see what we need to see?
  • Cloud computing
He predicts “The cloud movement will see a major leap forward in the first half of 2010″
  • Internet TV and movies
  • Convergence conundrum
Are you getting tired of being a walking device carrier? Cashmore predicts the demise of some single-use devices as they get absorbed into apps on iPhones. Others, he says, are fads.
  • Social gaming
He says there is growing interest too in virtual currencies.
  • Mobile payments
He is is predicting 2010 will be a”break-through” year.
  • Fame abundance, privacy scarcity
our personal privacy will continue to be eroded, but we will be the principal agents in the process. We need to learn what not to share.
  • Of course, as always, our concern will be for the impacts these have on education, students, and educators.
