Social Networking et al resources

Have you come across Common Craft Productions? They produce video materials on web 2.0 tools. Today I found a couple of new videos I hadn’t seen before. They do seem to have the knack of explaining/describing the complex in really simple terms.

the iphone - an early report

This is a 5 minute video created by Elliot Masie on July 2 just after he had bought his new iPhone
http://www.learning2007.com/iphone1
He promises that the Masie Centre will be doing more in-depth reports in the coming weeks. His first impressions are interesting.
I currently am subscribed to an email service from the Masie Center (http://www.masie.com/)
It called TRENDS […]

Establishing your online presence(s)

I am interested in how people resolve the need for more than one online presence. As of last Saturday I now blog in 4 places. How did that come about? Well, apart from my life here at education.au limited I also participate in a professional association, CEGSA (Computers in Education Group of South Australia) and […]

Dynamics in an online community-2 - trolls, pests etc

Of course one of the aspects of online community dynamics that we have to consider are the factors that inhibit their functioning.
For that reason “How To Keep Hostile Jerks From Taking Over Your Online Community” available at http://www.informationweek.com/shared/printableArticle.jhtml?articleID=199600005 makes interesting reading.
In order to ensure that people understand the requirements, or know there are netiquette requirements, of […]

Dynamics in an online community-1

One of the things that interests me greatly is what creates/builds a dynamic online community.
One of my presentations in the current round edna 2.0 workshops is titled Making Online Communities Work and I am not at all sure that gives the perspective that I want to impart. It seems to imply a sort of top-down view, whereas I […]

More on 3D environments

Some useful links that have emerged today:
Judy O’Connell has a posting Second Life Classroom - Not School, Not Home in which she talks about the difficulties in getting ’system’ colleagues to take 3D Virtual Worlds seriously. Discussion is emerging but is the reluctance to think about it all linked to the fact that everything, even […]

Did you get your newsletter “fix” today?

Among the other jobs that I do as part of my work at education.au limited on the edna team, is that I produce The Networker, a fortnightly newsletter keeping people up to date with what edna is doing, including as well as some titbits of news related to Australian education.
The latest issue was published this […]

Keeping up with the information flow

As you’ve probably guessed, I spend most of my time online. Keeping up with information and trends in education is very important to me.
I belong to a few email lists, media alerts and the like. I also use an RSS reader and filter a lot of information that way. My RSS reader software was created […]

Predictions for 2007

Robin Good says these are the technologies that are going to change the ways I look for and find information, the way I communicate, and the means by which I network and collaborate.
Check them out online at http://www.masternewmedia.org/news/2006/12/20/new_media_trends_and_2007.htm
as I am only going to list them here. I find Robin’s RSS feed a good one to […]

Is email obsolete?

Nothing seems to pinpoint the difference between the generations more than the email debate.
We are told that the Y generation favours instant messaging but is that because of the tools (handhelds, mobiles etc) they have, and perhaps because they use the messaging for social and recreational purposes rather than for ‘real work’?
In my workshops I […]
