The US Intelligence Community recently released a study comparing RSS and Atom. The findings are interesting (if somewhat predictable):
- If you must use RSS, then we recommend RSS 0.91 or RSS 2.0, preferably the latter.
- However, for all of the reasons presented in this paper, we recommend a gradual transition to Atom 1.0 for the Intelligence Community because we believe Atom is the superior syndication format. IC organizations should move toward publishing Atom feeds.

Personally, I found another of their recommendations gratifying:
- In an effort to lessen the impact such a transition might entail for each organization, we propose two specific solutions in the following subsections: Atomic RSS and ROME. You may also find Tips for Generating Good Feeds (Mark Nottingham) helpful. We encourage your developers to investigate these strategies.
ROME is an open source RSS/Atom generator/parser that I’ve been a contributor to for some time.
Anyway, the report makes good reading for anyone trying to quickly come up to speed on the issues surrounding syndication formats.
