This podcast features Howard Rheingold’s keynote presentation in Melbourne on Tuesday 2 October.
In this presentation Howard Rheingold talks about the two phenomenon which are becoming very important when we bring the world of education and the world of the internet together. These phenomenon include the:
- Critical reading skills necessary in the era of the search engine as the internet has shifted the focus of responsibility for determining the authority of the text from the publisher and the library to the reader.
- Need for an education based rather than a regulation based response to the moral panics over young people being online.
Howard Rheingold also says that in an age of participatory media it is essential for education to teach students the connection between citizenship and media literacy skills. By learning how to use media production and distribution technologies students will be able to develop a public voice about issues they care about.
