Just reading the replay. Very slick. Kudos.
Maybe have the audio recording underneath?
a la http://wikipediaweekly.org/
Just so's we leave behind a tidy record.
(gotta keep the TL's happy)

See, I'm learning to think inside the professional boxes.

Media production tools is what I mean by "all this stuff". Someone (our goddess) mentions an idea (of livestreaming to a blog) and that creative mind of yours goes into overdrive with how to combine the best of both. At least Coverlite is more interesting than IRC

So many tools. So many ways of going about things. Such tiny budgets, duplicating tiny budgets. And the best solution is always a hybrid. I'm not sure of the edna demographic but it will include people who watch (passively) this kind of programme and use its online portion. http://www.abc.net.au/tv/qanda/video.htm?pres=20080828&story=1 (53:12 onwards)

I'm just being mindful of KerryJ's comment (on her education.au blog) about banging in nails. We need to be tender with the meat.

Hi Simon

Thanks for the feedback - a pleasure as always! With several hours worth of audio, syncing slides and audio wasn't practical -- so I'm glad you're not finding it too awkward.

I'll be publishing parts three and four tomorrow - they deal with work and lifelong learning, so I know you'll find them interesting.

Cheers!

Kerry,
Thank you for the links - great topic! I appreciate accessing the index of podcasts so I can choose which one to listen to first.
I find the slides arranged in a separate website easy to scroll back and forth as the audio is playing.
Thanks too for not loading me with more emails than I already receive. This blog is a good way for me to record my comments in the context of the discussion.

Dear Simon,

Not sure what you mean by "a go at this stuff". Podcasting? Cover it Live?

There was no live stream of audio, so no, I couldn't have just pointed you at a live stream of audio. We could have used something like Ustream but we have found the Cover it Live tool much more accessible for people in regional areas in our previous uses of it for the DER symposium and the Eportfolio Symposium.

It couldn't have been easier to ask questions on the day Simon -- all one had to do is type a name and a question -- much KISS'ier than email no matter what your age and much simpler for someone paraphrasing on the fly and moderating a lively chat on the side. ; )

Slidecast sounds interesting and I'll be sure to check it out, although VoiceThread would also do the job. As I've spent a great deal of time readying the podcasts, it may be something we need to budget for for future events.

Please share what you do on your blog or for your events.

Cheers!

Nice attempt Kerry,

It's great to see have ago at this stuff. Any chance that next time you could just point us to the live stream? And just give us an email address to ask questions? You know, KISS for us old folks.

You might like to consider what http://wikipediaweekly.org/ do, as a way to offer some context for the seminars.

Lastly, perhaps a http://www.slideshare.net/faqs/slidecast so we don't have the A and V separation

Good Stuff! (boring lecture though)

Melanie, I think you have something there. Bureacracies are so locked into policies and procedures that their people don't always feel free to brainstorm or think creatively. Martin suggests that in the first step of Imagination people should be set free -- then the ideas can be analysed in the second stage. But if you are conditioned NOT to think outside a very defined box, it would take some time to get outside of it. Cheers, Kerry

Thank you edu.au for an outstanding morning and providing these tools for sharing. Martin's messages were very timely as we dialogue around the national curriculum but also to remind us that it is the quality of the teacher that matters and their capacity to deploy web2.0 tools to enhance the fundamental relationships which impact on learning.
It appears to me that it would be possible to embed Executive Functions into a national curriculum; many states have worked to utilise the qualtiy teaching frameworks derived from the QLD productive pedagogies, but designing an assessment regime which will value these processes will be the challenge.

Hi Kerrie and thanks again for your participation on the day.

The microphone icon is to shut off the sound effects, not for live audio streaming unfortunately.

A tool like they use for the Ed Tech live audio events or Ustream would be better suited to that. Perhaps we can look at those tools as well and evaluate what is most useful. My thoughts are that regional participants might have problems with the audio -- so maybe a hybrid would be worth considering -- running audio through Ustream and the Cover it Live tool for text. Hmmmm...

Thanks for that alison! That was the intent and it's good to get that sort of feedback for education.au to use in budget planning. They have to justify the spend on little ol' me spending time to set up the tool and then flying over to spend the day live blogging. It's great when practitioners take the time to let us know whether or not we're offering value and what we could be doing better. Cheers! KerryJ

I agree, Kerry. Particularly for people out in regional Australia, or working in supposedly cash strapped departments, real-time blogging is enormously useful. Makes you feel you can keep current despite the distance.
Thanks.

I thought the live blogging experience was an interesting one.
Having used it for only an hour or so prior to this event, then I wondered how we would go with a 7 hour event, and I appreciated your dedication to the task Kerry, particularly in the afternoon sessions where on the live blog the participants (in the live blog) appeared to be more interested in sparring off each other than in hearing (through you) what Martin was actually saying.

Unfortunately in the latter part of the day, work got in the way, so my concentration was fragmented. I got a lot out of the morning session though.

I noticed on CoverItLive a microphone icon and I wondered if that means we could feed live sound into the blog? One of the participants in my trial on the weekend discovered that her Dragan Naturally Speaking software would feed into the comment space.

I think one of the big pluses of CoverItLive is that you don't have to login or install any new software in order to add your comments to the "chat".

Well done, on what was a huge sustained effort on your part.

I think one of the big pluses of CoverItLive is that you don’t have to login or install any new software in order to add your comments to the “chat”.

Well done, on what was a huge sustained effort on your part.

Dear Rob -- thanks for taking the time to comment.

The idea isn't that the content is urgent, but to bring the even to people in an accessible way; to give those unable to attend the event the chance to take part, ask questions, get answers and to join in the conversation live as it happens.

It's not about filtering it through my experience or anyone else's -- it's another form of blogging.

Cheers!

live blogging has got to be one of the worst uses of the new technology.
If something is worth reading, its worth spending a little time to get it right.

most of your audience will be reading later on - so where's the big hurry it getting it published.

Its not like this is particularly new ideas - lots of people are commenting on it

the content is not so urgent that it needs to be published during the event

but it will benefit from a more thoughtful reworking than just a trite reporting of what the speaker said 30s ago.

Would love to find out more about what went on. I present on Creative Commons licensing and educators are often surprised as to the limits the current system imposes and the fact that many "traditional" copyright restrictions are still print-focused.

As we explore e-portfolios for students, educators have to ensure that their students know how to find and use resources legally in creating projects. That way the work they create will have more relevance, a longer shelf life and a wider audience than that of teacher and classroom. And knowing that their projects will form the basis of their e-portfolios -- students are bound to produce better quality work. Creative Commons has a vital role to play in all of this.

Also the co-author was Katrina Keogh.

Nice article on P11 of the 'Review' section of today's Advertiser. Sam Harris about Howard in a piece entitled 'Teachers should learn from cyber generation'.

Might even do a little post about it myself.
Really liked the closing para:

'Remeber the days of two or three television networks and one phone company? That's what that these (neutrality/drm/openness) battles are all about - putting the genie of innovation back into a well-controlled bottle.'

[...] Mark Pesce (whose and slides are available here) argued that the question “What is the truth?” has now become “Who do you trust?”. There is a potentially a clash of cultures between the Wikpedia model and the older encyclopedic model; has the culture of expertise, he asked, been out-evolved by distributed authority? He concluded by predicting a coming war between elites (who’ve traditionally possessed knowledge), special interests (who try to shape knowledge to their own ends), and communities (which are just becoming aware of the knowledge latent within them - and are beginning to use tools like wikis to harness that knowledge).
RE: "the largest education blogging network on the web"... on the English language web perhaps, but...

The ABC plays an integral part in school at the moment. It is becoming a major player in delivering school based programs that leads to open discussion and comment within the classroom. Our class fully enjoyed the presentation and found it was a different avenue to create open discussion.

For me the opportunity to listen, discuss and debate with the people who have registered to attend each of the locations and with Jimmy Wales is the exciting part.

.....and guess who the speaker for the next seminar in August is??? ....you guessed it - it is danah boyd. danah's visit will open yet another door on the discussions educators across Australia are having about knowledge and information in the 21st century. :-)

A great product no less but with a community consisiting of a zillion other luminaries one would have done better to get Dana Boyd across the oceans.

I can't wait for Mr Wales to shares his insights. We're a small Perth group and we're working on a collaborative live art project, called "TheBroth - The Global Mosaic". One of the main aspects is the educational potential of the project. I believe collaborative learning has a big future ahead of it. Exciting times indeed!
