The most significant internet safety message for 2007?

danah boyd danah boyd’s blog post ‘Just The Facts About Online Youth Victimization‘ for me as a parent is the most significant individual blog post I have read online. It intelligently deals with children, internet safety, identity, peer pressure, online social networking and practical suggestions for society’s response.

The same issues inform web development and online collaboration community decisions here at education.au as we design new websites such as the myedna proof of concept project.

The YouTube video presentations are grounded in fact and practical hands-on understanding of internet technologies. This is a refreshingly frank professional insight into children’s online behaviour. The presenters are:

Each of the presenters do their research by engaging directly with children and the online space they occupy.

I can’t help but think that this is a good model I could use myself as a parent: I would ask my own child to teach me how to stay safe online using chat, email, social networks, sms, the web etc. I see my role to work through the emotional and social implications of the issues raised and faced by my child.
